American Apathy

"Most Americans don't want to hear, see or feel anything about Iraq, whether they support the war or oppose it." The Iraq War Article I found focuses on the apathy Americans have developed during the ongoing five year war. It details situations of politicians and their reactions to the war that often exclude shame or guilt but instead carefully placed phrases of "encouragement" and "minimal sacrifice." That small sacrifice only includes 4,000 plus American lives. The article then shifts to the many movies that have been made based in the Iraq war and states that "Iraq is to the box office as garlic is to vampires." He uses this example to illustrate how Americans wish nothing more than to ignore the war instead of paying to feel guilty while enjoying their moviegoing experience.

The style in which the author writes blatantly states that the government is who to blame for the apathy that America feels towards the Iraq war. And yet, the government officials still fail to recognize the consequences of their decisions or claim responsibility of the shame and guilt that they ought to feel. His voice and sarcastic wit pours through his writing with facts followed by reality stated in a way that makes the reader feel that this war has gone on far too long for the wrong reasons without anyone taking responsibilty.
